OK God, you got my attention now...

  • Hello, Noah? This is no time for fun and jokes...

The world took notice when The Ark landed on top of Mount Ararat... is this so much different, I just had to ask.

I believe the world is round and it is the Japanese who have been murdering our dolphins... no, they are not just there for you guys to eat, with or without mercury poisoning.  I know you have nuclear problems now too, makes you think, doesn't it?  I'm not actually saying anything, I am just wondering aloud...
The world is there for all of us to enjoy, but what has happened to humility and respect, compassion and love?  If we wish to see more good things happening in the world, then we need to be good ourselves.  Mother Nature is way more powerful than any of us would care to admit and maybe, just perhaps, she is quite capable of looking after herself.

I just wish to say to the dolphins that I am thinking of you and I hope you enjoyed the surf!  Jokes aside, I pray that you get the respite that you deserve and hope that you choose to stay with humanity (if we dare call it that) here on Earth for eons to come, please don't go the same way as the Quagga...

The Early Bird Catches the Pentax...

Dear Rainbow

STANFORD STRETTON’S BIRD FAIR 2010  1-3 OCTOBER

The tradition of the Stanford Bird Fair continues due to the generous sponsorship that makes this event possible. Edward Snell & Co are sponsoring all birding activities under the banner of their Strettons London Dry Gin brand.

BirdLife Walkerbay, assisted by Stanfordinfo, are hosting the event this year. We are putting together a fair that, apart from birds, will cover a variety of activities attracting a cross-section of people, young and old, to Stanford for what will prove to be a memorable weekend.

We are once again lucky to have access to an impressive array of birding experts who will be delivering talks, leading guided field outings and hopefully will be identifying local birding hotspots in the Overberg for those who wish to do their own thing. We are optimistic that these activities will allow our guests to acquaint themselves with the elusive Rock Jumper, the highly-endangered Bank Cormorant and a variety of other birds endemic to the Overberg. In addition, there will be talks on Overberg amphibians and bats as well as an outing to spot the Blue Crane.  In addition, the organisers will pay special attention to arranging activities for non-birders and children. These will include items such as talks on Overberg amphibians, as well as South African bats, the ever-popular Eagle Encounters (raptors in flight), snakes and a variety of films.  There will be continual birding river trips for the duration of the weekend as well as a mini-pelagic boat trip from Kleinbaai.  Keep an eye on the program for up to date details of all events and outings.

The Stanford Birding Photographic Competition is becoming an ever popular part of the Stanford Bird Fair and this year we are pleased to inform you the

2010 STANFORD BIRDING Photographic Competition has begun!

The 2010 STANFORD BIRDING Photographic Competition is now open for submissions! Last year, the winner of the competition was Basie van Zyl with his Little Egret Feeding.  He won a Flight of the Giants with African Wings, to photograph both whales and birds!

So, you may be pondering why enter this competition - well you have the opportunity to bathe in much admiration and fame…  Basie made the front page of the Hermanus Times, but what else?  Prizes of course...  all of which are certainly worth aiming for!  What are the prizes you may well ask?

Pentax Binoculars from Foto First to the value of R2 800

Shark cage diving with Marine Dynamics to the value of R2 700

(More to follow…)

So, what are you waiting for – go on – get all the info on rules, resizing of images and much more...  All at www.stanfordbirding.co.za

Just remember entries must reach the moderators before 24 September 2010.  Only e-mailed submissions will be accepted. The address is info@stanfordbirding.co.za. May the best photos win!

The judging of the popular photographic competition will be followed by a Strettons Gin tasting at the Stanford Evening Market.

Love really can conquer all...

July 25 - July 31, 2010
The Sun's move into your romantic sector on Friday would normally be the headline of the week, bringing the solar focus onto your romantic situation. Yet it's likely to be overshadowed by Saturn's return to your relationship sector the day before, completely stealing the Sun's thunder. This may create more than one show down, for as well as Saturn finding himself in opposition with Uranus he's competing with the Sun's romantic agenda. This may see Saturn's return to your relationship sector get off to a bumpy start, with a need to see any relationship tension or pressure as a sign that you're trying to tackle too much, too soon. This is one of those times when love really can conquer all, with the Sun's warm romantic vibes putting a lot of things into perspective.

My Olde Home... Lavender Cottage

This was a pinnacle, one of those times when everything just comes together perfectly - and then something goes wrong! Let's just call it a Durch hiccup and an English burp...

I am so grateful to have had the opportunity of setting up a self-catering establishment, 29 beds in all, a total of 5 houses. Bruce and I did everything lourselves more or less and oversaw the labour for the farm management and cleaning. If I pulled 1 Blue gum Tree out I pulled 10 000 and if Ipulled out a whole host of other young alien trees - all the better for the Overberg...

It was a priviledge to have the Common Duiker visit us constantly over the almost 4 years we were there. They got so calm and tame, the dogs could be just metres away and they would be fine.

The last two years of our stay we had turned this unit into the pet-friendly unit and we stayed in the other old house on the new section of farm that Thomas Hendriksen and Stuart Findlay purchased. It's not that funny, but they asked us to help them with the sale of the extra land because we were not only the only ones onsite, but I have 10 years commercial property experience. We gave them Pierre, who bought about 40 ha and also did a deal with them to plant Proteas on their land. What did they give Bruce and I for arranging this for them. Zero, nada, nothing, niks nie. Just like nearly all the other promises made to us over the four years. It turns out they only wanted to go ahead with all this self-catering business so they could illegally get money back from our Govt in respect of the Tourism Grant. Once they got all the money they could, they stopped our business (the only way we had of making money) closed the doors of Oak Grove Farm self-catering, other than their own house when they are not there... and rented out all the other units full term. If you don't believe me, phone the Department of Trade and Industry fraud hotline... I don't care how nice their land is, I was not prepared to be treated in this manner.

It breaks my heart to know that all my 5th wedding aniversary plants, given to me over 8 years ago, are all in this garden... The White Stinkwood tree in the centre of the garden is rather precious, and I can only hope Bruce wants to relocate them all for the 4th time... Oh well, we will certainly be able to collect the protected Cycad given to us years ago, still in it's pot in the back garden of Lavender Cottage.

Chief Seattle's Letter to George Washington

My husband found this on the Internet way back in 1996 and my sister, Deborah Jean Baker, read it at our wedding at Sadawa in the Karoo on 13 April 1996.

TO ALL THE PEOPLE

Chief Seattle, Chief of the Suquamish Indians allegedly wrote to the American Government in the 1800's - In this letter he gave the most profound understanding of God in all Things. Here is his letter, which should be instilled in the hearts and minds of every parent and child in all the Nations of the World:

"The President in Washington sends word that he wishes to buy our land. But how can you buy or sell the sky? the land? The idea is strange to us. If we do not own the freshness of the air and the sparkle of the water, how can you buy them?
Every part of the earth is sacred to my people. Every shining pine needle, every sandy shore, every mist in the dark woods, every meadow, every humming insect. All are holy in the memory and experience of my people.
We know the sap which courses through the trees as we know the blood that courses through our veins. We are part of the earth and it is part of us. The perfumed flowers are our sisters. The bear, the deer, the great eagle, these are our brothers. The rocky crests, the dew in the meadow, the body heat of the pony, and man all belong to the same family.
The shining water that moves in the streams and rivers is not just water, but the blood of our ancestors. If we sell you our land, you must remember that it is sacred. Each glossy reflection in the clear waters of the lakes tells of events and memories in the life of my people. The water's murmur is the voice of my father's father.
The rivers are our brothers. They quench our thirst. They carry our canoes and feed our children. So you must give the rivers the kindness that you would give any brother.
If we sell you our land, remember that the air is precious to us, that the air shares its spirit with all the life that it supports. The wind that gave our grandfather his first breath also received his last sigh. The wind also gives our children the spirit of life. So if we sell our land, you must keep it apart and sacred, as a place where man can go to taste the wind that is sweetened by the meadow flowers.
Will you teach your children what we have taught our children? That the earth is our mother? What befalls the earth befalls all the sons of the earth.
This we know: the earth does not belong to man, man belongs to the earth. All things are connected like the blood that unites us all. Man did not weave the web of life, he is merely a strand in it. Whatever he does to the web, he does to himself.
One thing we know: our God is also your God. The earth is precious to him and to harm the earth is to heap contempt on its creator.
Your destiny is a mystery to us. What will happen when the buffalo are all slaughtered? The wild horses tamed? What will happen when the secret corners of the forest are heavy with the scent of many men and the view of the ripe hills is blotted with talking wires? Where will the thicket be? Gone! Where will the eagle be? Gone! And what is to say goodbye to the swift pony and then hunt? The end of living and the beginning of survival.
When the last red man has vanished with this wilderness, and his memory is only the shadow of a cloud moving across the prairie, will these shores and forests still be here? Will there be any of the spirit of my people left?
We love this earth as a newborn loves its mother's heartbeat. So, if we sell you our land, love it as we have loved it. Care for it, as we have cared for it. Hold in your mind the memory of the land as it is when you receive it. Preserve the land for all children, and love it, as God loves us.
As we are part of the land, you too are part of the land. This earth is precious to us. It is also precious to you.
One thing we know - there is only one God. No man, be he Red man or White man, can be apart. We ARE all brothers after all."

Men in Black...

This photo of the Men in Black, at the Needle in Dublin, re-inspires me to think of my Pyramid of Life Project - POLP FICTION... The Eye of the Needle...Needless to say, I'll probably needle you too :) And on that note, with a clint in my eye, I need say no more. Superb Photoagraphy! (Well, I had to have the last word, didn't I?)
